  1. The White Tiger

Released on 22nd January 2021, this movie based on the book by Aravind Adiga makes it to the top of our list. It revolves around an ambitious Indian driver, Balram Halwai, and how he uses his wit to rise to the top. A grim thriller you cannot take your eyes off, starring Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra and Rajkumar Rao, this movie must make it to your list too. The White Tiger is now streaming on Netflix.

2. AK vs AK

Also available on Netflix, AK vs AK is a meta thriller-comedy directed by the critically acclaimed Vikramaditya Motwane. It follows a film-within-a-film narrative where the characters play themselves. Anurag Kashyap who plays himself kidnaps Anil Kapoor’s daughter, Sonam Kapoor, while forcing him to search for her while being filmed.

3. Tribhanga

Directed by Renuka Shahane, Tribhanga is a family-drama film available on Netflix. Starring Kajol, Tanvi Azmi and Mithila Palkar in the leading roles, the film revolves around a dysfunctional family of three women and their unconventional life choices. The title is derived from an Indian classical dance pose from Odissi, which is described as imperfect but beautiful quite like the lives of the three women.

4. Soorarai Pottru 

This film is a Tamil film. The title can be translated to “hail the brave”. Directed by Sudha Kongara, this film is available on Amazon Prime Video. It follows the life of Nedumaaran, whose ambition to start an affordable airline company meets a number of obstacles.

5. Chhalaang

Also available on Amazon Prime Video, Chhalaang is a comedy-drama directed by Hansal Mehta. Montu, a lazy PE instructor, is too comfortable with his mediocre way of teaching. That is, until he meets Neelima, a new teacher, who teaches him the true joy of being a mentor.

6. Shakuntala Devi

This biographical comedy is based on the life of the Human Calculator, Shakuntala Devi. Directed by Anu Menon and played by the infallible Vidya Balan, this charming movie depicts the struggles, wins and the sheer intelligence of Shakuntala. The movie is available on Amazon Prime Video.

7. Gulaabo Sitabo

This comedy, directed by the very able Shoojith Sircar and brought to life by Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bacchan, is on Prime Video. It beautifully paints a picture of a stingy old landlord who wants to evict his tenant. A classic feel-good movie.
