Talks are ongoing for Lady Gaga to play Harley Quinn in Joker 2 – Check full news here!
If reports are to be believed, the upcoming instalment of Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” story will sound and look very different from the 2019 success.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phoenix’s alternate interpretation of the classic Batman villain will also include a potential parallel accomplice in crime in the form of former Arkham Asylum psychologist Harleen Quinzel.
However, neither Kaley Cuoco from the cartoon “Harley Quinn” nor “Suicide Squad” actress Margot Robbie are being considered for the part. Instead, the source said Lady Gaga is in preliminary discussions to make her… um, we have no idea what she would wear.
The DC Extended Universe, in contrast to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has grown steadily larger, with its properties residing throughout a vast cosmos. All of this is to argue that “Joker” very much lives in its own reality, which would account for a new Harley Quinn.
The second intriguing development about the sequel is that sources are telling THR that it would be a musical, which is why Lady Gaga is being considered as a candidate.
Last week, director Todd Phillips announced the new movie on social media with a picture of Joaquin Phoenix, who has apparently not officially committed but is in discussions, reading the script. The title of the movie was also disclosed: “Joker: Folie à deux.”
The phrase “disorder affecting two or more individuals” is used in the title as a nod to medical language. That may easily refer to both Harley Quinn and the Joker in this situation. After the events of the first movie, perhaps the two will cross paths in Arkham Asylum.
The musical component would also make more sense if it is delivered from their combined perspective, or even just Harley’s. Given Harley’s upbeat personality and the fact that the original movie included scenes from the perspective of the Joker, a musical doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch from her point of view.
Phillips is also familiar with Gaga because they collaborated on the 2018 adaptation of “A Star Is Born” with Bradley Cooper. A reunion between Gaga and Phillips may have the same magical effect as her performance, which received praise for both her acting and singing.
If all goes as planned, we might be able to anticipate seeing “Harley Quinn: No Way Home” in the future with Robbie, Cuoco, and Gaga all three resuming their roles for a titanic confrontation with the Joker himself.
After all, Harley Quinn is just as well-known for leaving the cunning psychopath and carving out her own identity as a villain/anti-hero as she is for having been his longtime paramour.
