Password sharing of OTT platforms will soon be illegal in the U.K.: Here’s what we know so far

OTT platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime and others are quite popular in the U.K. As you are aware, you have to set a password for your personal account on any of these OTT platforms.
Just like in most other countries, password sharing is common among friends and family in the U.K.
As per the Intellectual Property Office, password sharing of OTT platforms is illegal. Copyright infringement is not the right thing to do. Beyond this, piracy is also a big problem. Password sharing is a criminal as well as civil concern.
There are provisions in the criminal as well as civil law related to the same. Primary and secondary provisions have been mentioned. Netflix will roll out broader features starting early 2023 onwards. It might also create an option of sharing sub accounts for friends as well as family. Netflix might also charge an additional cost for the same. Other service operators such as Disney + Hotstar as well as Amazon Prime are yet to comment or share updates about their plans.
It is not clear whether legal action would be taken by OTT platforms against people sharing passwords anytime soon. However, it is expected that they will take action sooner rather than later. The governmental agencies in the U.K. are hopeful of the same.
