A semi-autobiographical Netflix series starring Vince Staples will be produced by Kenya Barris

According to sources, Vince Staples will launch his own scripted comedy series on Netflix.

The rapper and actor who stars in “The Vince Staples Show,” a show that is partially based on his life, has received a series order from the streaming giant. In the show, Staples will play the title role. In Long Beach, California, where Staples grew up, the show will be filmed.

Along with acting, Staples will also function as executive producer. In addition to Calmatic, executive producers include Ian Edelman, Maurice Williams, Corey Smyth, and others. Co-showrunners of the show are Williams and Edelman. Additionally, “Entergalactic,” an animated Netflix series featuring Kid Cudi, was executive produced by Barris, Edelman, and Williams. For “The Vince Staples Show’s” opening two episodes, Calmatic will serve as director.

“I am excited to partner with Netflix and Kenya Barris on ‘The Vince Staples Show,’” said Staples. “This has been something I have been developing for some time and I am happy it’s coming to fruition.”

This will not be Staples’ first appearance in a scripted project on television. His previous work includes cameo appearances in movies like “Dope” and a self-starring part in an “Insecure” episode. He also performed the voice for “Lazor Wulf,” an animated series on Adult Swim.

“It’s our mission to work with the best artists in the world,” said Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy. “Vince has already established himself as one of the most talented young musicians today and we’re really excited about how his sensibility – and sense of humor – will translate into a unique comedy series.”

Prior to leaving the streaming service to take a partner position in the recently established BET Studios, Barris was reportedly under a multi-year deal with Netflix that was paid nine figures. In addition, he serves as an executive producer for the upcoming “Entergalactic” Netflix animated series, which is based on the same-named new Kid Cudi album. He is working on a number of other projects as well.
