Amazon AWS Bahrain Region Facing Disruption Amid Drone Activity, Migration Underway

Amazon has now confirmed that its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing region in Bahrain is currently facing issues. Further, Amazon confirmed that it is actively working to migrate workloads to alternate AWS regions.

Check out more about this ongoing situation and what has been revealed below.

Amazon AWS Bahrain Region Issue – What Has Been Shared

An Amazon spokesperson made a statement to Reuters, “As this situation evolves and, as we have advised before, we request those with workloads in the affected regions continue to migrate to other locations.” Based on earlier reports, the disruption is said to be linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Previous reports claimed that US/Israel strikes targeted Iran’s energy infrastructure. Following this, Iran, via several media reports, stated that it would target American tech infrastructure in the Gulf region.

At present, Amazon has only mentioned that the issue is due to drone activity in the region. But didn’t confirm the extent to which its AWS infrastructure was impacted. Notably, earlier in March, AWS facilities in both the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain had also experienced major outages. Several reports claimed that two facilities in the UAE suffered direct hits, leading to structural damage. A site in Bahrain was also affected due to the impact of a nearby strike.

Since data centres are physical infrastructures, standard software-based redundancies are not capable of protecting them from direct structural damage. Amazon had also previously noted that recovery from such incidents could take a prolonged period. In such cases, recovery involves rebuilding damaged structures, replacing hardware components, and restoring full operational capability, which can take months instead of minutes.
