Volkswagen recalls over 44,000 ID.4 EVs as their high-voltage batteries may catch fire

Volkswagen is officially recalling over 44,000 ID.4 EVs in the US market, as it has been found that their high-voltage batteries may catch fire. According to the company few battery fires have been reported so far, and to fix this issue, the company has issued three recalls in less than two months for the concerned owners.
The first recall was issued on 3rd December, 2025, as per which the potential number of units affected was 629. The company recalled certain 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles as their high-voltage battery cell modules were said to contain misaligned electrodes that can result in a battery fire.
The second recall was issued on 21 January, 2026, as per which the potential number of units affected was 670. Certain 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles were recalled, mentioning the same reason as the first recall.
In the first two recalls, the owners of the vehicles were advised to park the vehicle outside immediately after charging and not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight until the recall repair is complete. They were also advised not to use Level 3 DC chargers and to limit the maximum charge of the battery to 80% until the remedy has been completed.
The company mentioned that the dealers will replace high-voltage battery cell modules as necessary, free of charge. It is said that interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk for the first recall were mailed by December 18, 2025, while owner notification letters for the second recall are expected to be mailed on March 20, 2026. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen’s numbers for the first recall are 93EV, and the second recall is 93EW.
The third recall was also issued on 21 January 2026. This recall included the highest potential number of units affected- 43,881. Certain 2023-2025 ID.4 vehicles were recalled as their high-voltage battery may overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
For this third recall issue, dealers will update the high-voltage battery software and replace the high-voltage battery, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters for this recall are expected to be mailed by March 20, 2026. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 93EA.
