Bridgestone Reveals 3rd-Gen Airfree Tyres with Real-World Testing Planned for 2026

Bridgestone has now unveiled the third generation of Airfree tyres, which are made to eliminate the need for air filling.

Here is more to it.

Bridgestone’s 3rd Gen Airfree Tyres

Bridgestone has now lifted the curtains from its 3rd Gen prototype of the Airfree Tyres, which brings some key improvements compared to its previous versions. It represents the latest evolution of their non-pneumatic (airless) technology, moving from concept toward social implementation. This generation focuses on advanced simulation technology and structural designs using flexible, high-strength materials to handle various environmental conditions.

Looking at its key features and design, it features a Dynamic Structural Design, evolved from the 2nd generation’s focus on ride comfort, to a structure that uses AI-driven automated learning to optimise shape and control strain appropriately for diverse usage environments. The 3rd Gen Airfree Tyres use the “Empowering Blue” Spokes design, which features an internal spoke structure coloured bright blue to maximise visibility at twilight and in low-light conditions, specifically designed to enhance safety in local community mobility. Instead of air, the tyre uses a unique structure of spokes made from recyclable thermoplastic resin to support the vehicle’s weight and absorb road shocks.

Its demonstration experiments began in Kodaira City, Tokyo, in March 2024 to verify the value of the tyres for “Green Slow Mobility” solutions. However, passenger car users may have to wait a little, as currently Bridgestone is testing the application of these tyres in commercial trucks and ultra-compact electric vehicles (EVs), since professional fleets require high maintenance.

In a press note, the company mentions that the 3rd Gen Airfree tyres are now a key exploratory business in Bridgestone’s 2024–2026 Mid-Term Business Plan, with the company aiming for real-world testing this year.
